Shingles Missing Granules:

Granules are small stone like particles of asphalt that give the shingle it’s a rough texture. Some granules are embedded in the shingle and others interlock with embedded granules but are much more loose by design.

A clear sign of a weathered roof is granule loss on the shingles. Shingle granules are important for a couple of key reasons. First they help reflect UV rays off of homes roof, which helps keep your home cool. Granules also offer an added layer of fire resistance, making them particularly important in dry, hot climates. One of the other key benefits is their aesthetic appeal bringing texture to your roof which is a key and often overlooked architectural aspect of your home.

Moderate granule loss is common and shouldn’t raise concern, but if your shingles are becoming bald, it’s time to have your roof inspected and see if you need a roof replacement.

Should you see cracked or broken shingles on home’s roof, you should replace them asap, as they are even more damaging to the structural integrity of your roof than curled shingles. Moss Cover

When the climate is cooler and your roof doesn’t get a lot of sunlight, it encourages the growth of moss on your roof, particularly between roof shingles. This is a potential hazard to your roof as moss locks the moisture against your roof, which eventually seeps into and weakens your roof deck. This moisture can start to cause shingles to crack when they begin to freeze.
